The five-oil starter kit

If you are buying essential oils for the first time, start with five versatile oils that cover the most common use cases before expanding to specialty scents:

  • Lavender: Relaxation, sleep support, general calming. The most versatile single oil.
  • Peppermint: Focus, energy, cooling sensation. Popular for home office use.
  • Eucalyptus: Respiratory clearing, fresh air feeling, clean scent profile.
  • Lemon: Uplifting, fresh, general-purpose brightening for a space.
  • Tea tree: Antibacterial properties; common in cleaning blends and surface sprays.
Buy these brands: Plant Therapy, Rocky Mountain Oils, and NOW Foods are consistently cited for quality and honest labeling at accessible price points. doTERRA and Young Living are quality brands but sold through multi-level distribution, meaning prices are significantly higher than comparable direct-to-consumer products.

What "100% pure" actually means

The term "100% pure essential oil" has no regulatory definition in most markets. Reputable brands back this claim with GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) test results, which verify the chemical composition of each batch. Look for brands that publish these results publicly or provide them on request. Plant Therapy and Rocky Mountain Oils both do this routinely.

What not to buy for a diffuser

Do not use fragrance oils (also called parfum or fragrance blends) in an ultrasonic diffuser. Fragrance oils are synthetic compositions that smell similar to essential oils but contain compounds that can build up on the ultrasonic plate and degrade it over time. Pure essential oils only.

Starter kit sets on Amazon

Multi-oil starter sets are available from several brands at lower per-bottle cost than individual purchases. Key things to check before buying a set:

  • Bottle size per oil: sets often contain 5ml to 10ml bottles (enough to evaluate a scent)
  • Brand reputation and testing transparency
  • Whether the set includes the specific oils you actually want (many sets include niche scents)

Search Amazon for "essential oil starter set" and filter by the brands above for current price and availability. Prices on sets change frequently.

How much oil to use

For a 300ml to 500ml diffuser, 3 to 5 drops is standard. More is not always better: overpowering a small room with essential oil can cause headaches rather than relaxation. For a large unit like the LEVOIT LV600HH, 5 to 10 drops is appropriate. Start on the lower end and adjust based on your preference for intensity.

Storage

Essential oils degrade with exposure to light, heat, and air. Store them in dark glass bottles (they typically come in amber or cobalt glass for this reason), in a cool location away from direct sunlight. A drawer or a dedicated oil box works. Citrus oils (lemon, orange, grapefruit) have shorter shelf lives; use them within 12 months of opening.

Blending basics

Common starter blends for diffusing:

  • Focus blend: 3 drops peppermint + 2 drops lemon
  • Sleep blend: 4 drops lavender + 2 drops eucalyptus
  • Fresh air blend: 3 drops eucalyptus + 2 drops tea tree + 1 drop lemon
  • Uplifting blend: 3 drops lemon + 2 drops peppermint
