The key difference: PrecisionVision obstacle avoidance
The Roomba j7+ carries a forward-facing camera trained on real-home obstacle images using iRobot's AI. The system identifies and routes around phone chargers, USB cables, extension cords, shoelaces, socks, shoes, and pet waste on the floor. When the camera detects an obstacle, the robot stops, marks the location on its map, and routes around it.
The i3+ uses bump sensors only. It detects an obstacle when it makes contact, backs up, and navigates around it — it cannot classify what it hit. In a home with cables, the i3+ will nudge them. In a home with a pet that has an accident, the i3+ will drive through it.
The P.O.O.P. guarantee
iRobot's P.O.O.P. guarantee (Pet Owner Official Promise) covers j7 and j7+ only: if the robot contacts pet waste and creates a mess, iRobot replaces the robot free of charge. The guarantee exists because iRobot is confident in the j7+'s ability to detect and avoid pet waste. It is not available on any other Roomba model.
For pet households where accidents are possible, the j7+'s obstacle camera and the P.O.O.P. guarantee together justify the price premium. The cost of replacing carpet or upholstery after a robot vacuum incident typically exceeds the price difference between the two models.
Where they are identical
Rubber dual-brushroll cleaning
Both models use iRobot's rubber counter-rotating brushroll. Rubber resists hair tangles and works equally on hard floors and carpet without mode switching. Hair wrapping is near zero on either model. This is iRobot's most meaningful cleaning advantage over budget bristle-brush robots at comparable prices.
Clean Base auto-empty
Both the j7+ (standard) and i3+ (bundle) use the same Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal. The base empties the robot's dustbin via suction into a sealed AllergenLock bag after each run. The bag holds 60 days of debris. Replacement bags cost $15 to $20 for a 3-pack and are identical between both models.
Smart mapping and scheduling
Both build a smart map after 2 to 3 runs and support room-specific scheduling via the iRobot Home app. Both support Recharge and Resume for large homes. The app experience is the same for both models.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Roomba j7+ worth the extra cost?
For pet households: almost certainly yes. For homes without pets and with managed floors: probably not. The i3+ cleans as effectively for $100 to $150 less. The camera adds value for specific situations defined by what's regularly on your floor.
Do both have the same auto-empty base?
Yes. Both the j7+ (standard bundle) and i3+ bundle include the Clean Base. The robot inside is different; the base is the same unit and uses the same AllergenLock bags.
What is PrecisionVision Navigation?
iRobot's term for the j7+'s camera-based obstacle detection. The robot uses computer vision trained on real-home images to identify specific object categories and route around them before contact. The i3+ does not have this system.
Which is better for pet hair pickup?
Both are equally effective at picking up pet hair. The rubber dual-brushroll on both handles hair pickup identically. The difference for pet households is what happens when the robot encounters waste — for that, the j7+ is the right choice.
