What "self-cleaning mop" actually means
When a robot returns to the full-cleaning station after a mop run, the station runs a wash cycle: it pumps clean water from the station's clean-water tank over the mop pad while the pad spins or oscillates against a wash brush. Dirty water collects in the station's dirty water tank. The mop then dries under warm air for 2 to 3 hours to prevent mildew.
The result: the mop pad is clean and dry before the next run. This is the key quality difference for daily mopping. A robot that mops without a wash cycle carries dirty water from one run to the next: the floor at the end of the run is being wiped with progressively dirtier water. A self-washing station breaks this cycle.
What you still have to do weekly
Full-station systems are not zero-maintenance. The honest weekly tasks:
- Refill the clean water tank: Holds approximately 2.5 to 4L; lasts approximately 4 to 7 days at daily use. Takes 1 minute.
- Empty the dirty water tank: Holds approximately 2.5L; check every 4 to 5 days. Cloudy gray-brown water. Pour into a sink. Takes 30 seconds.
- Check the auto-empty bag indicator: Replace when the app shows full (every 4 to 6 weeks in standard households). Takes 1 minute.
- Inspect the mop pads: Mop pads wear over 2 to 4 months of daily use. The station wash cycle cleans but does not replace worn pads. Replace when pad surface degrades. Takes 1 minute.

Is a full-station system worth the premium?
The price gap between an S8+ ($699) and S8 Pro Ultra ($1,299) is approximately $600. That $600 buys you: auto-mop-washing (30 minutes per week of manual mop rinsing saved) and auto-water-management (2 minutes per week of tank refilling added back). The math: if you value your time at $30/hour, you save 30 minutes per week (roughly 26 hours per year) but add 2 minutes per week of tank work. Net: approximately 25 hours per year at $30/hour equals $750 in time value. The full-station cost approaches break-even on time value within the first year for daily mopping households.
For households where mopping is daily and the person doing the cleaning has a meaningful hourly rate or limited time: the full-station justifies its price. For households where mopping is occasional or manual mop rinsing is not burdensome: the S8+ is the better value.
