Not all home office upgrades are equal. This is the order in which upgrades tend to have the most measurable impact:
- Lighting (free to improve by repositioning, or ~$30 for a basic ring light)
- Webcam (dramatically improves how you appear on video calls)
- Microphone (critical for podcasting; also useful for meetings)
- Monitor (comfort and productivity over long work days)
- Chair and desk ergonomics (prevents long-term pain)
- Keyboard and mouse (personal preference; less universal impact)

Lighting matters more than the webcam
A $40 ring light or a lamp repositioned to face you will improve your video call appearance more than upgrading from a $60 webcam to a $150 one. Before buying a new webcam, try moving an existing light source to face your face directly. Most laptop webcams produce acceptable results in good light.
Monitors for home office
For most remote workers, the upgrade from a 24" 1080p monitor to a 27" 1440p (QHD) monitor is the most impactful single display investment. Text is noticeably sharper, you get more screen real estate, and eye fatigue is reduced over long sessions.

Keyboards worth considering
Mechanical keyboards have meaningful advantages for heavy typists: more tactile feedback, longer lifespan, and replaceable switches. For casual typing, a good membrane keyboard is perfectly sufficient. If you type for several hours daily, a mechanical keyboard is worth the investment.
- Best value mechanical: Keychron K2 or K6 (wireless, compact, hot-swappable)
- Quiet switches for shared offices: Keychron with Red or Brown switches
- Compact ergonomic: Logitech MX Keys Mini
